Frequently Asked Questions
Pocket Door Hardware Information
Will I need a special size door to make a pocket door?
Almost any height and width door with a standard door thickness of 1 3/8" or 1 ¾" will work well in a pocket door application.
How much will a pocket door frame kit hold pertaining to the doors weight limit, and width, & height dimension limits.
We stock the L.E. Johnson 2000 series pocket door frame kit that is capable of accommodating a door of up to five feet wide by nine feet tall, and weighing as much as 300 pounds. If you have a door larger than this you can purchase just our loose track and hardware and build your own frame. Ask us if you have any questions.
Can a pocket door frame kit be cut down?
All of the frame kits can be cut down to accommodate any smaller height or width size doors.
What size do I need my rough opening (R.O.) to be?
The rough opening width for all four series of frame kits will need to be two times the door width plus 1". Example: If you want to put in a 36" wide pocket door, your rough opening will need to be 36 x 2 + 1 = 73" wide.
The rough opening height will vary according to what series frame kit you use. With the 1500 series you will have to add 4 ½" to your door height. With the 1560 series a minimum of 5" must be added. With the 2000 series a minimum of 6 ¾" will need to be added to your door height. With the 2060 series a minimum of 7 1/4".
Can you have two doors coming out of the same pocket?
Yes, you can have two doors coming out of the same pocket as long as your wall is wide enough. Your wall will have to be a minimum of 7 ½" wide to accommodate both frame kits in one wall.
Can I do a pocket double door application that meets in the middle, where one door comes from the right and the other door from the left?
Yes you can, you will need two pocket door frame kits, and a converging pocket door kit. The converging door kit connects the two pocket door frame headers to make one continuous header, which allows the doors to meet in the middle of the opening.
Can I latch two doors together?
When doing a double converging pocket door application there are two ways to latch the doors together. You can use a privacy pocket door pull, or if more security will be required you can use a heavy duty pocket door mortise lock.

Are the pocket door frame kits hard to install?

What else will I need other than the pocket door frame kit?
The only other essentials are a door and a pocket door pull and we also have pocket door jamb kits to help you trim your doorway out.
Can I replace my existing track with the L.E. Johnson track?
As long as you have the correct R.O. (rough opening) height, you can switch tracks. The required R.O. height for the 100 series track must be the door height plus 1 ¾" to 2 ¼". For the 200 series it will need to be the door height plus 3 ¼" to 4".
Do you have to open the wall to accommodate a sliding door?
No, you can create a very nice sliding door application by using our L.E. Johnson 2610F or the 200WM wall mount sliding track and hardware. The wall mount application mounts on top of but outside of your door opening and slides right along your existing wall. Also, you can build a pocket door unit, adding thickness to an additional wall, such as needing a pocket door on a concrete wall. Just add a pocket door frame kit up against a concrete wall, and just drywall on the outside. Increase your wall thickness on the whole wall, and add wider jambs.
